36-lung cancer

About
Tumor cells and masses in the lung tissue; leading cause of cancer death in men and women in the U.S.
Assess
Cough, chronic cough, change in cough, persistent cough, blood in sputum, chest or shoulder pain, infection, pleural effusion, pneumonia, weight loss, weakness. Risks include smoking, second hand smoke, genetics, occupational exposure, environmental exposure.
Complications
Metastasis, death
Diagnosis
  • Pain related to disease process.
  • Ineffective airway clearance related to disease process.
  • Ineffective coping related to fear of diagnosis and treatment.
  • Activity intolerance related to increased oxygen demands.

Goals
  • The client will have a decrease in pain and dyspnea.
  • The client will identify energy conservation techniques.
  • The client will demonstrate understanding of medication therapy and treatment.
  • The client will be able to discuss feelings related to diagnosis and treatment.

Interventions
  • Assess lung sounds, vitals, pulse-oximetry, sputum, coughing pattern, pain levels frequently.
  • Assess client's current understanding of disease process, treatments, and medications.
  • Encourage client to discuss fears, concerns, and feelings related to disease process.
  • Administer oxygen as indicated by a physician.
  • Prepare client for radiation and/or chemotherapy as indicated.
  • Administer analgesics, antiemetics, steroids, antihistamines as indicated for symptom management related to treatment.
  • Monitor CBC, electrolytes during treatment.
  • Teach client to eat several small meals to increase caloric intake and decrease fatigue associated with disease.
  • Encourage client to take frequent rests in between activity to conserve energy.
  • Encourage family to verbalize concerns, fears and encourage support programs.
